Renier Coetzee
Professor
Prof. Renier Coetzee is an Associate Professor at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and a pharmacist with expertise in pharmaceutical public health, with a special focus on the quality of medicines and antimicrobial stewardship in the community setting. He holds a B.Pharm and M.Pharm from North-West University and a Pharm.D from Rhodes University. He recently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Law at the Dullah Omar Institute, UWC, strengthening his work at the intersection of health, law, policy and governance.
Prof. Coetzee currently serves as the Interim NRF SARChI Chair in Health Systems Governance at UWC, building on a long-standing commitment to strengthening health systems through research, education, policy engagement and collaborative partnerships. His research focuses on translating evidence into practical improvements in medicine use, antimicrobial stewardship, pharmaceutical systems and health-system performance, with extensive national and international collaborations.
He is also actively involved in professional leadership and currently serves as National President of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA). In this role, he contributes to advancing the pharmacy profession, strengthening collaboration across the health sector, and engaging with policy and regulatory priorities affecting pharmacy and medicines.
His work is grounded in a commitment to building people, strengthening systems, and translating knowledge into better health.
