The S Buys Academy, part of SPAR Health, aims to uplift and upskill individuals in the pharmaceutical service provision environment. The Academy is accredited by the SAPC to provide training for Pharmacists’ Assistants (Basic) & (Post-basic), and training for nurses and doctors to apply for a dispensing license. The Affordable Medicines Directorate (AMD) sub programme within the Cluster Health Products Procurement in the National Department of Health is responsible for developing systems to ensure access to essential pharmaceutical and medical related commodities (health products). This is achieved through the selection of essential medicines, development of standard treatment guidelines, awarding and management of health product contracts and licensing of persons and premises that deliver pharmaceutical services.
Units within the Directorate and their responsibilities:
Essential Drugs Programme (EDP): responsible for the selection of essential pharmaceutical commodities and promoting their rational use. This includes ensuring that selected medicines are safe, effective, affordable and appropriate for the relevant level of care.
Contracting, Governance and Policy: responsible for tendering and alternative contracting mechanisms to secure affordable medicines, promote effective procurement and governance, and support reliable and sustainable supply.
Contract Management: responsible for monitoring and managing the performance of parties to established contracts and supporting Participating Authorities to maximise financial and operational performance, proactively manage risks, and ensure reliable and uninterrupted supply; and
Licensing: responsible for processing and managing licences relating to pharmaceutical services, including the licensing of relevant persons and premises.
