The South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating the pharmacy profession in South Africa. Established in terms of the Pharmacy Act, 1974 (Act 53 of 1974), the SAPC oversees pharmacists, pharmacy support personnel, pharmacy students, and pharmacy premises to ensure that pharmaceutical services meet acceptable standards of quality and safety.

The Council’s primary mandate is to protect the public by promoting safe, effective, and ethical pharmacy practice. It achieves this through the registration of pharmacy professionals, accreditation of education and training programmes, development of professional standards, and monitoring of compliance with regulations.

The SAPC also promotes continuous professional development, investigates professional misconduct, and conducts inspections of pharmacy premises to maintain high standards of care. Its mission is to support universal health coverage through patient-centred pharmaceutical services while safeguarding public health and advancing the pharmacy profession in South Africa.
