Clinical Skills Workshop
Topic: Sore Throat Management & Antimicrobial Stewardship in Community Pharmacy

A practical skills opportunity for registered conference delegates

Sore throat is one of the most common conditions encountered in community pharmacy practice. At the same time, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a significant threat to healthcare systems globally and in South Africa. Community pharmacists are uniquely positioned to support appropriate antibiotic use, strengthen responsible self-care, and provide evidence-based advice to patients.

Designed by pharmacists, for pharmacists, the Sore Throat Education Bundle provides practical, evidence-based learning to support the management of sore throat in the South African pharmacy context.

As part of this initiative, the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA), in collaboration with the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA), invites registered conference delegates to participate in an interactive Clinical Skills Workshop focused on translating knowledge into practical consultation skills for everyday community pharmacy practice.

Build confidence. Strengthen your consultations. Support responsible antibiotic use.

The workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to practise and strengthen their skills in:

Conducting a structured sore throat consultation
Assessing sore throat presentations
Identifying red flags and appropriate referral needs
Applying evidence-based approaches to sore throat management
Communicating effectively with patients about treatment options
Engaging patients in antimicrobial stewardship conversations
Supporting appropriate antibiotic use through patient-centred communication
